I fixed it by removing the ‘spaces’ for the hosts variable:
[[ ! -z "${host}" ]] && hosts[ ${#hosts[@]} ]=${host}

replaced by

[[ ! -z "${host}" ]] && hosts[${#hosts[@]}]=${host}
